Selena Marie Gomez was born on July 22, 1992 in Grand Prairie, Texas to father Ricardo and former stage actress Amanda. The actress was named after former Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla. She has two younger half-sisters: Gracie and Victoria.
Selena had a hard childhood; her mother had her when she was just 16 years old and her parents split when she was young. Her mother worked hard to provide for the family while growing up, though they often had very little.
As of August 2020, Selena has more than 185 million followers on Instagram, 61.8 million followers on Twitter, 61 million followers on Facebook, 20.9 million followers on TikTok and 26 million subscribers on YouTube.
Selena wanted to be an actress after watching her mother prepare for stage productions herself. The actress began auditioning for various roles, where she met Demi Lovato. The two later worked together in “Barney & Friends” in 2002, the same show they auditioned for when they met.
The actress appeared in 13 episodes of the show from 2002 to 2004, her first big break in acting. During that time, Selena had smaller roles in “Sky Kids 3-D: Game Over,” “Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire” and “The Suite Life of Zack and Kody.”
Selena’s big breakthrough came when getting involved with Disney. The actress got a recurring role on “Hannah Montana” in 2007. She also filmed pilots for two other Disney shows. She later auditioned for “Wizards of Waverly Place” and got the lead role. Selena and her mother moved to Los Angeles for the job.
The show became a hit for Disney and earned Selena multiple nominations and awards. In addition, Gomez sang the lead song for the show “Everything Is Not What It Seems.” She later appeared in the Jonas Brothers music video for “Burnin’ Up.”
Selena appeared in a number of movies and TV shows after that, including “Another Cinderella Story,” “Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie,” “The Suite Life on Deck” and “Horton Hears a Who.”
At 16 years old, Gomez signed with Hollywood Records. The record had already signed Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato. She started “Selena Gomez & The Scene,” her first band. Their 2009 debut studio album topped the charts when it was released. They released their second studio album that year and received a mixed response, though the album did well. Their third and final album was released in 2014.
In 2013, Selena launcher her solo career with “Stars Dance.” The lead single “Come & Get It” performed well. She’s released three albums as a solo artist: “”Stars Dance” in 2013, “Revival” in 2015 and “Rare” in 2020. All three albums debuted on the Top Billboard 200 charts. She has had more than seven top ten singles and has sold more than seven millions albums worldwide.
Selena also created her own production company as a teenager called July Moon Productions and partnered with XYZ Films. She was scheduled two release two films under her company: a film adaptation of “Thirteen Reasons Why” and “What Boys Want,” though neither were made. She later produced the Netflix adaptation of “Thirteen Reasons Why.”
Since her Disney channel days, Selena has starred in a number of movies and TV shows, including “Spring Breakers,” “Getaway,” “The Fundamentals of Caring,” “A Rainy Day in New York” and the “Hotel Transylvania” franchise.
In addition to her music and film and TV career, Selena is known for her large social media following. At one point, she was the most-followed person on Instagram.
Selena has had a number of other ventures, including an eco-friendly clothing line, a perfume line, a handbag line, a make-up line and more. When she was 17 years old, she was appointed UNICEF ambassador.
Selena has received numerous accolades and awards for her work. In 2017, she was named Billboard Woman of the Year.
From 2011 to 2014, Selena dated Justin Bieber in a highly publicized and highly discussed relationship.
In 2014, Gomez fired her parents as her managers and signed with the WME and Brillstein companies. During this time, she signed a new recording contract with Interscope Records, releasing a compilation album as her fifth and final release through Hollywood Records. Gomez released her second studio album, Revival, in October 2015. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, while the first three singles all topped the Mainstream Top 40 chart in the United States. She embarked on her worldwide Revival Tour in 2016. Gomez is currently working on her third studio album.
